What can I do if I have Scratches on my wood floors?

It is so cute to watch your little puppy slide around the floor as he takes a turn.  Little Johnny likes to make ramps and watch his matchbox cars land on your wood floors.  It makes such a cool noise.  And your daughter practices her tap routine……

What can you do to enjoy beautiful hardwood floors and yet not have to treat your home like a museum, but rather a fun place to live?  We will discuss options you have available when those scratches add up and need to be addressed.  with a little fore thought you can keep maintenance inexpensive and easy.

First, decide realistically what you need your floors to look like.  If you have many scratches that have gone into the wood and have become a nasty gray or black color, it may be time to have them sanded and refinished. Most times scratches and dents can be sanded out, in the case where they are too deep, boards can be replaced.  Your local wood floor refinisher can give his recommendation.  If the scratches are more surface,  you may be a great candidate to have the floors buffed ( or screened).  You can then have a coat of  polyurethane applied to your floors.

Here is some tips to remember:  If you decide that your floors need to be refinished,  after the floors are sanded down to the bare wood, have at least 3 coats of oil- based polyurethane applied.  Some homeowners have 4 coats put down in high traffic areas such as kitchens or foyers.  Many recommend a high-quality oil- based poly, which has proven to hold up real well.  If you decide to go with a water- based poly, be sure to use a high quality product such as Traffic, made by Bona

Let’s discuss the process of buffing(or screening) and coating your wood floors.  Again this is a good option, if the scratches are more surface type and you have never waxed your floors.  Your contractor will first clean the floor, if needed to remove any residue.  Then buff the floor using a screen pad( similar to a window screen).  This will prepare the floor properly.  After the floor is vacuumed and dust is thoroughly removed, a coat of polyurethane can then be applied.  When using oil- based poly you should plan to stay off of the floor for 24 hours.  Many will have this simple and inexpensive option done on a yearly basis in high traffic areas, whether the floor needs it or not.  This type of maintenance would allow you to enjoy beautiful  floors, without ever having to go through the sanding and refinishing process.

Of  course the best way to deal with scratches is to prevent them in the first place.  See the article “How do I clean my hardwood floors”  for great tips. So don’t get rid of the kids or the pet, just follow these maintenance tips and you’ll be all set!
